What is UTDesign® Capstone?

UTDesign® Capstone is a program that provides UT Dallas senior engineering and computer science students with a meaningful experience on their Capstone project by partnering with industry to create solutions to real-world engineering and computer science problems. Sponsored UTDesign Capstone projects are proposed and mentored by companies. Students not only get to work on a real company project, but also gain valuable experience working in an environment similar to that of their industry mentor(s).

How do students find general information about their project resources?

The best source of information for your UTDesign Capstone project is the Resources page. Through that page, you will find all the resources available for our students: reserving a conference room, downloading a reimbursement form, etc. Another must-read document is the Student Guidelines.

How do students reserve a conference room?

Students can reserve conference rooms online. There are six conference rooms available for reservation online. Check room, time and availability. Submit the form and a confirmation will be sent if reservation is approved.

When is the UTDesign Studio available?

The studio is available 24/7. To gain entrance to the building after standard operating hours, students may use their Comet Card with the card reader. Only students enrolled in UTDesign® Capstone and/or UTDesign EPICS and after passing a set of training courses will be able to access the studio after hours.

Is the fabrication shop also open 24/7?

For most students, the fabrication shop is only open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For UTDesign® Capstone students who have completed the in-person training, and for Student Tool Masters (STMs), there is 24/7 access. All students must complete required training before being permitted to use the fabrication shop. Please contact Gene Woten, the UTDesign Studio Manager, for more information on how to use the fabrication shop.

How do students purchase items for their UTDesign® Capstone project?

Thoroughly read the Ordering page, where the purchasing process is outlined. Complete the necessary forms and submit them to the project’s UT Dallas Advisor for approval. Projects have a limited budget, and you are responsible to keep your project’s expenditures within that budget. Once your order has arrived, you will be notified to pick it up at SPN.

How are project stations assigned?

Each team is assigned a project station for the duration of the project. Project stations include work and storage space, as well as necessary equipment, as applicable. Table assignment is done by the UTDesign Studio Manager, Gene Woten, in collaboration with the appropriate faculty director.

How do students ensure the security of their project parts and materials?

Access to the UTDesign open lab area is limited to students currently enrolled in the UTDesign® Capstone and EPICS programs. Each work station has its own storage cabinets. More secure storage can be arranged as requested by the sponsor and approved by the UT Dallas Advisor. The open lab requires Comet Card badge access after normal business hours.

Whom should students contact to check out tools from the Fabrication Shop?

Every time you need help in the Fabrication Shop or need to check out tools, contact Gene Woten, the UTDesign Studio Manager.

Do students have access to printers, etc., in the studio?

For printing, plotting, photocopying, scanning and faxing permission questions, visit the Printing, Scanning & More page and ask staff for assistance, if needed.

How do students schedule a 3D printer job?

Students do not have direct access to the large 3D printers made by Stratasys and Fortus; however, they will be able to access the small 3D Gence printers. To schedule a job, students need to contact the UTDesign Studio Manager, Gene WotenVisit the 3D Printer page for more information.
